SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Purpose:

  • To encourage and assist youth from Caribbean countries who are currently resident in Ontario to pursue their educational goals at the university or college level.
  • To recognize academic efforts, community involvement and contribution in the Caribbean community in Ontario.

Number and Value of Awards:

In 2018, two (2) bursaries will be awarded.
 
The value of each bursary to be awarded is CDN $1,000.00, to one recipient. The bursary is non-renewable and non-transferable. The bursary is to be used towards full course of study, leading to a first diploma or first degree.

Where tenable:

These awards are tenable at any accredited university, community college or trade school in Canada.

Eligibility:

To be eligible the applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. Applicants who are not older than 24 years of age and whose parents, guardians or grandparents are of Caribbean descent; or a Financial/Honorary member of one of the CCAC Member Associations who is in good financial standing.

  2. A first year or continuing student enrolled at or currently attending a university, college or trade school;

  3. Submit proof of enrollment to the qualifying university or college or trade school. Proof of registration must be mailed or faxed to CCAC.

  4. Applicants must be actively involved within the community or engaged in extra-curricular activities.

Scholarship Selection Committee

A five (5) person Selection Committee consisting of representatives from the CCAC community and appointed the Board of the CCAC will be responsible for administering the selection process on behalf of CCAC. The committee will select recipients and their decision shall be final.

EVALUATION WILL BE BASED UPON:

  • A copy of Academic transcript.
  • Two letters of reference, one from an academic institution attended within the last two years of the year of application; and the other from a community member other than a parent outlining:

    a) How the referee came to know you.
    b) How long the referee has known you.
    c) Why the referee thinks you are deserving of the award

  • An essay of approximately 250 words outlining (in the applicant’s own words) why the applicant should be selected.

  • The applicant must also outline academic achievements and any volunteer activities and leadership roles they have assumed.
  • The applicant should also include any economic factors relevant to the application.

Requirement of the Recipient(s)

The Recipient(s) should be available to participate in future award ceremonies and be willing to serve as role models in the CCAC Community.

Terms of Payment

A cheque/money order for the full amount of the award will be made payable to the Office of the Registrar at the institution the recipient will be attending.

Scholarship recipient(s) will be contacted in a reasonable time and presented to the community during an event organized by an affiliate member of the Council of Caribbean Associations - Canada.

  • Personal Statement (maximum 2 pages or 250 words)
    Topic: Why I should be awarded this Scholarship
  • Letter of Acceptance from College/University
  • A brief resume
  • Any additional information you feel would support your application
