The Liverpools of St. Vincent and the Birth of Caribana

Many of us look forward to Caribana celebrations every summer in Toronto. But how many people are aware of its origins? Well the two documents below highlight a couple of Vincentian brothers who were instrumental in creating this famous Caribbean festival.

• Excerpt from a write-up on Dr. Samuel Allan Liverpool:
“Dr. Samuel Allan Liverpool served on the founding ‘Caribana’ committee, named ‘The Caribbean Centennial Committee’ in 1967. The committee members decided to create a West Indian contribution to Canada’s Centennial celebration. The answer lay in the form of a carnival, which gave birth to ‘Caribana’.”
